A little history on the Seniors Centre …
In 1975 a few senior women had the insight into constructing a Centre where they could meet on a regular basis. The Municipality donated the land, tax free, so they went to work on building a place they could do the things they enjoyed. In March of 1975 they formed their Senior Drop-in Centre but had no funds, so they held raffles to buy materials which they sold at a craft show.
In June 1975 the members applied for a grant from New Horizons, to purchase material, machines and tables. Bake sales were held, crafts were sold, bingo raised money and they started selling cement blocks for the future Senior Centre. By March 1979 they officially became a Society with $12,000 in their account.
After three referendums, the Seniors Activity Centre was finally approved by the taxpayers. On March 1980 the sod-turning ceremony took place. Much of the building was done by seniors who donated their time and knowledge. The ladies were responsible for the basement. They set up a Library in the basement with books, board games and puzzles available for the members.
Over the years the Centre offered many activities such as lawn bowling, carpet bowling, carpenter shop, flower arranging, lapidary shop, square dancing, garden club, construction of a float for the annual July parade, bridge, cribbage, sewing, quilting, exercise classes and painting.
Today
In 2021 construction was completed on our new premises as part of the Multi-generational Activity Centre (MAC) at Bottom Wood Lake Road with the original building now a part of the MAC, along with a new building for the Boys and Girls Club.
Today, we offer activities including Tai Chi, Yoga, Seniors fitness classes, computer classes, line dancing, Big Band rehearsals, two art groups, sewing, quilting, drop-in card and table games, bridge, Mah Jong, crib tournaments, table tennis, snooker, darts and educational seminars. Our weekly Tuesday Lunch Program is popular and typically hosts up to 90 members and non-members who enjoy the home cooked fare and socialization.
The Centre continues to be a hub for individuals aged 50+ to come and stay fit or simply socialize with their contemporaries.
Office open Wednesdays and Fridays 10 am to 2 pm.
